In the days of the Great Eastern Railway, these delightful tram locomotives were classified as C53s, and wore matching liveries to their equally unconventional coaches, creating a rather quaint little rural train. In Later life, these curious trams were classified as J70s by the LNER and BR, and some time ago Model Rail commissioned us to produce the J70 in its LNER and BR liveries.

To complement this and to coincide with the launch of our GER-liveried W&U coaches, our friends at Model Rail have given their permission for us to produce a limited run of GER-liveried C53s as part of two special train packs, and in their Pre-grouping guises.

Before 1919, the locomotives were painted in coach brown with ultramarine blue frames and hauled matching coach brown tramcars. After 1919, the locomotive livery changed to crimson and grey, and the tramcars were repainted crimson.

Now, strictly speaking, the C53s were goods engines, but it’s highly likely that they would have been pressed into passenger service on the W&U when required. Each train pack features an appropriately numbered and liveried C53 tram, alongside coaches No.7 and 8 in matching livery. All 3 vehicles are exceptionally detailed on the outside, underside and inside, including coach interiors, end steps, handbrakes and other detail fittings. The C53s include a highly detailed cab, exposed boiler and internal workings.  We have also been able to improve on the original Model Rail design and included an upgraded circuit board with a Next18 decoder socket and Fitted- speaker.
